What is Aid and Attendance Special Pension and how does it work?
This is a brief explanation; if you need additional information please complete our questionnaire.
First, you must meet certain qualifications:
• The Veteran must have served at least 90 days in the military
• Having served at least 1 day during a war time period (even state side)
• Received an honorable discharge
• Widow of a Veteran must not have divorced the veteran or remarried. (Exception: If the Veteran died due to service related disabilities and the widow remarries prior to the age of 57, she then loses benefits)
• Must have less than $80K in assets (not including your home or car)
• You must have a physician order that indicates that you need the assistance of another (aid & attendance) to be safe.
• You may choose any licensed service or property to live.
This Special Pension with Aid and Attendance benefit is largely unknown. There are over 2 million veterans and widows who qualify for this benefit. If a veteran/spouse or surviving spouse of a veteran is in need of assistances from another for eating, dressing, undressing, verbal cueing, transportation, incontinence (bathroom) needs (and more). Or if they are blind or live in a nursing home due to physical or mental disabilities they may be eligible. Also, home care and assisted care in an assisted living or personal care home can also qualify. This is a pension benefit and is not based on service related injuries.
Approximate eligibility can pay up to (2009):
• Veteran: $1644.00 per month OR
• Surviving Spouse: $1,055.00 per month OR
• Married Couple: $1949.00 per month OR
• Veteran’s Wife: $1,291.00

It is difficult to determine how long the application process will take since each claim is individualized. If there is a severe medical need you can expect it to take approximately 90 days or less, if properly documented. The average claim usually takes about 4 to 9 months, but can take a year or more if your application is wrong or is missing critical information. However, most families are in need of this benefit in a timely manner. The Aid & Attendance Pension payments are retroactive to the first of the following month after you submitted the claim when you start services or move.
